Romanian DTH deal nears

Romania’s DTH market, which is currently served by no fewer than five platforms, may soon see its first round of consolidation.

Unconfirmed reports from Mediafax suggest that the incumbent telco Romtelecom entered into talks with the DTH Television Group late last year to buy the latter’s Boom TV.

An audit was subsequently carried out by Boom TV, following which it was valued at €80 million, or €400 per subscribers (it currently has approximately 200,000).

However, Romtelecom is understood to be offering only €250 per subscriber.

Romtelecom, which is backed by OTE and Deutsche Telekom, already operates a DTH platform known as Dolce. It has around 600,000 subscribers, while the market leader Digi TV, owned by RCS/RDS, has some 1.1 million.

Focus Sat and Akta, the other players in the Romanian DTH marketplace, have around 140,000 and 85,000 subscribers respectively.
