    @carlo

    your helping him to enumerate the brand of DSR not in choosing, can you trim it down to top 10 or top 5 to make it better.

    @nightrider

    ask your friend how much he's willing to spend for his DSR? Then ask your local market the available Brand for that particular Price then would have a smaller list of DSR to choose from.

    things to look for in a receiver is kinda tricky, depending on his needs and budget. if he is more adventorous and the name of his uncle is Donald Trump, then he can get himself a Dreambox or Triple Dragon. even a Topfield or Humax PVR is ok. if he wants middle class receivers wherein he can have all the emus available and still have the option to play with the CI or CAM slots for legal subscription, then a samsung DSR 9500, Humax5400z or other receivers which give him the option of using software UCAS and CAM/Card at the same time. metabox3 and others like fortecstars go to this level. if he simply wants to watch channels and does not bother with legal subscription or cards and cams, then by all means, get him one of those boxes with available updates most of the time. fortecstar, technosat, metaboxes are one of the few which has less headaches and software is almost readily available from the net.

    im sure others will provide their own favorite pet receivers, so this list can go on and on.........

    there you go with the suggestion from dishman about metabox3, just make sure it is an original, comes in the name of Besat too. anyhow, as for fortectstars, i also see a lot of fast updates relating to this receiver, so it should not be a headache for you to search for softwares. again, what are his intentions in buying the receiver? if only to view the emulated channels via software, then no need to even buy the DSR with cam or ci slots on it. a plain fortecstar lifetime or metabox1 fta should do the trick for it. but if he wants to buy cams and legal subscription later, then he should buy the cam slot receivers. needs, and budget from your friend is a big factor here. let him start with ordinary receivers, if he gets bored with it, move up to the next thing, which is programming cams, etc... if he gets bored with it, buy a dreambox, topfield or humax pvr. if he gets bored with it, well, he can hack the National Security Agency website just for the heck of it. this hobby costs a lot, so if your friend really just wants to watch tv, stick with the basics.
