    Eurosport HD in May

    Source: broadbandtvnews

25th May 2008 is the day that Eurosport HD will launch. At the same time Eurosport will change standard definition services from 4:3 to the 16:9 format. Eurosport HD will be a direct simulcast of the existing international feed.

Laurent-Eric Le Lay, Eurosport group chairman, says: “Sport, especially live is spectacular in high definition; it transforms the viewing experience for sports fans. As the leading sports TV channel in Europe and specialists in the live broadcast of big international sporting events, it’s a natural move for Eurosport to enrich its TV offer with high definition. Eurosport will offer as much native HD content as possible and will offer more step-by-step.”

Eurosport HD will first appear on digital platforms in Israel, Turkey, Portugal and the Nordic countries (Canal Digital will deliver the channel).

French version of the Franco-German cultural cultural channel Arte will be launched in high definition on 30th October 2008. Arte HD is going to be available through TNT, French digital transmitters. German Arte HD will be launched on 1st January 2009.

French Arte HD will be transmitted in MPEG-4 and won’t be encoded. There are no plans for this channel to appear on satellite but its singal will probably be send through a satellite.

    BBC: live 3D HDTV trial

The BBC prepared a “world first” record on 8th March with live 3D HD test transmission of the Calcutta Cup rugby game Scotland vs. England, live from the Murrayfield in Edinburgh. The BBC prepared a “world first” record on 8th March with live 3D HD test transmission of the Calcutta Cup rugby game Scotland vs. England, live from the Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Last year the National Basketball Assoc “transmitted” the first-ever live sports event in 3D HD during its All Stars weekend from the Mandalay Bay hotel.

These BBC transmissions saw Sony 950 HD cameras with carefully matched lenses mounted on a special rig providing stereoscopic images that were beamed via a Telenor satellite to a VIP audience at London’s Riverside Studios (where the BBC’s first-ever colour broadcasts took place in 1967). The coverage was jointly organised by BBC Resources and The3DFirm.

The broadcast feed comprised two dedicated feeds (representing the left and right eyes) from each pair of linked cameras. The downlinked feeds from the satellite were then decoded back to 2 x HD-SDI outputs onto a Harkness silver cinema screen using a pair of Christie HD8K projectors, and viewed using conventional 3D glasses.
