    Most, but not all up to date laptops have no no floppy drive, communication & lpt ports. You can use a USB to Serial cable instead available in most computer shops, that emulates a serial port. Now depending on what type of pinouts to be used there could be a modification required with the said cable pin assignments.

    I know about the pinouts since I have used a "null cable on a desktop before.Now that I don't have that desktop anymore I am stumped.
    Before buying a usb to serial cable I want to know if it would work with the arioner software that connects to the startrack receiver

    Thanks for replying!

    @bme,

    congrats on your new lappie. you can either buy a pcmcia to serial port adaptor (expensive) or a usb-serial port adaptor (cheaper). the output of this usb adaptor will be a straight male configuration. depending on your needs, you can simply make a null modem cable if you need it or just buy additional cable ends like male-female converters. the comport is configured as your ordinary desktop port.

    But how about the wiring of pin connection to receiver? Do we need to modify it or just remain as is?

    this will simply convert your USB port to Serail ( COM ) port.. and then you can use it as you use any desktop pc com port .. i think i m clear ...and the cable pin connection you asked to your reciever depends on your reciever ...!

    youve got to try one first , like the straight connection if it doesnt work then modify your connector and make it cross connection , that's it .

    good luck ,

    the pin out for your usb-serial connector is a male, straight, just like any ordinary comport you can find on a pc, so from that, you can decide which configuration you need for your stb. good luck.

    I have also a laptop without commport, so I use a USB to com convertor like the one Ali4u shows in his reply.

    This works fine, I program my metabox and my dreambox with it.
    You use the "crosslink" cable.. NOT STRAIGHT..
