The National TV and Radio Council of Azerbaijan (NTRC) has decided to ban broadcasts of programmes in foreign languages by TV channels operating in the country, said council Chairman Nushiravan Maherremli. According to Mr Maherremli, the issue was discussed at a meeting with the heads of local TV channels.

The ban will take effect immediately. It will apply to all foreign languages except Turkish, which is widely understood in Azerbaijan. Mr Maherremli said that in special cases, permission will be given to TV channels to broadcast intellectual, analytic and news telecasts in foreign languages. In addition, the live telecast of speeches by foreigners will be allowed on air in their native languages, reports Trend News Agency.
