Does your lap top have an rs232 port (serial)? secondly.
If you are using a USB to serial converter then you need to connect this cable first to your USB port & then connect to a null modem cable & then to the STB.

Then you need to configure your port settings on device manager on comms & ports settings.

Sometimes ActivSync also interferes so try to disable active sync.

Use a good quality USB to serial converter with the supplied software.

Do post your results here as it will help others as well as some lap tops & operating systems have problems communicating from a USB to serial.
