Four music channels which German media company HighView Media is preparing will launch on November 1 on the networks of Germany’s largest cable operator, Kabel Deutschland (KDG). The channels will form part of KDG’s pay-TV package Kabel Digital Home, which costs EUR10.90 per month.

The services, under the umbrella brand Just Music.TV, will offer round-the-clock music catering to different target groups. Rock TV will focus on rock, metal, alternative, independent, folk, grunge, gothic and punk. Relax TV will show lounge, ambient, chill-out, folk and soul, while Club TV will cover club sounds and urban music such as house, dance, R‘n’B and hip hop. The fourth service, Jukebox, will offer pop and rock classics from the 60s through today.

With the new entrants, Kabel Digital Home will comprise 40 channels, including nine music services. These are, next to the new offers from Just Music.TV, Trace.TV, MTV Hits, MTV Dance, VH1 Classic and Gute Laune TV. HighView’s managing director Alexander Trauttmansdorff announced the company’s intention to enter the music television market in March.

In contrast to existing music channels such as MTV, which has evolved into a general interest service for young people, Trauttmansdorff explained that the new channels will be focused “absolutely and completely” on music and therefore will close a market gap which he says music fans often complain of. In the mid-term a fifth offer in HDTV is also planned, comprising a mixture of programmes from the other four channels.

HighView currently operates German documentary channel Planet and is a shareholder in city broadcasters Hamburg 1 and TV Berlin as well as thematic channel Wein TV (Wine TV).
