Default Laptop Computer & Video Recording

    Hi friends,
I have recently bought a laptop computer (P4 3.06G/512 RAM) and I want to record video / films from receiver. Also can I watch Tv channels on the screen by connecting to the Dish/LNB? How to go about it? Can somebody guide me? Thanks in advance.

do you already have a receiver, and which is it? if not, i suggest you buy a skystar2 usb for your laptop. if you want the normal STB, then you can get a neotionbox or discovery DSR which will enable you to record the show via videolink usb.

if you opt for the skystar2, yes you can view the channels on your monitor and may choose to output the video to your tv using the s-video connector on most laptops nowadays. the same goes true if you buy the neotionbox or discovery, you can view the channel on your screen since the videolink will transfer the data via usb to your pc for decoding.

be reminded though that on average, an hour of recorded video will cost your hdd space an average of 13G, so prepare to have a larger hdd or transfer your files to another media to avoid filling up your hdd (you can convert the raw video mpeg2 to vcd format using tmpgenc software.)

thanks baba4u for the confirmation. an ordinary video card will not allow you to record directly to your hdd using the rca connections from your STB, you need at least a video card like the ATI all-in-wonder wherein it allows for Video-In and the audio you have to take from your sound card (this setup is kinda messy so not advisable too).

for video encryption, multiplexing, burning etc, you better go to www.vcdhelp.com

Thanks to all for suggestions. I will consider the options one by one.

I have a Pinnacle (PCI) TV card meant for desktop. I am looking for PCI to USB adaptor. Would it help?

pci to usb adaptor? i don't think you can find any for that. i suggest you buy a dazzle usb video adaptor, that way you can encode directly from your source into vcd compliant mpeg format. or if you wish to, you can buy also a skystar2 usb for satellite transmissions. both options are costly. the cheaper alternative will be to buy a receiver with usb video link for your pc. it's your choice.

I suggest, better go to computer shop then ask the salesperson/technician which external TV card is the best and compatible to your laptop....It may solve your problem without hazzle. :P

i think recording movies from stb is a nice fun but if u use desktop computer its more convenient .all u need is a t.v card simply and record from any device through r.c or r.f, buy a snazzi t.v card for recording in many formats like mpeg1 mpeg2 dvd etc...and other idea is buy a dreambox with hard drive and u r done
