RTL takes over Talpa Media - entire staff of TV channel Tien made redundant!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

RTL Nederland has purchased Dutch TV channel Tien and the radio stations of John de Mol’s Talpa Media. RTL News says that the takeover means the end of Tien, and that all its staff are being made redundant. John de Mol says that’s regrettable and painful. However, some of Tien’s most successful programmes will transfer to RTL, including the rights to highlights of Dutch Premier League football, for which Talpa outbid RTL in 2005. Talpa Media receives 26.3% of the shares in RTL Nederland.

It’s better news for Radio 538, which is being taken over as a going concern, and there are no staff or programme changes planned. RTL Nederland CEO Fons van Westerloo says that “a radio station with the target group and reach of Radio 538 fits in seamlessly with the existing activities of RTL.” Radio 10 Gold and Juize FM, the other two radio stations owned by Talpa, will also transfer to RTL. It’s understood there will be no redundancies at these stations either.
