Default Bharti to launch DTH services by August

Bharti to launch DTH services by August

The Bharti Group has already established their market leadership in the telecommunications segment and is now forging ahead with their ambitions to be in the digital media. The soon to be launched DTH services, Bharti Telemedia, is now in its advanced stage of readiness and industry sources inform that the DTH platform should be launched by August this year.

Bharti is interested in leveraging their manufacturing expertise using the resources of their manufacturing arm, Bharti Teletech, which will produce the set-top boxes for the DTH services. The DTH space is getting crowded with three players, Dish TV, Tata Sky and DD Direct, already in the air and more gearing up to join. Among the new entrants, are the high profile Sun TV and the Reliance Blue Magic service.

The fate of the new entrants in the crowded DTH space depends on the demand. The initial players like Dish TV, Tata Sky and Doordarshan could make a dent in the cable industry dominated by cable operators dishing out analog feeds only due to compulsory Conditional Access System (CAS) box regime.

The first phase of this came into effect in selected areas of the major metros from January 01, this experiment was the cause of the CAS chaos fiasco. Unprepared cable CAS and DTH operators were not equipped enough to cope up with the demand generated due to the compulsory implementation. When the cable operators blacked out the paid channels on Jan 01, all hell broke loose and most house holder could barely manage one box per hose hold to view their favorite channels resulting in a 'saas-bahu' war each, wanting the box to view their paid channel.

Media analysts guess that over 90 per cent of the cable industry still works on the analog format and the switch over to digital platform is no easy task. The digital platform is only of interest to the elite to compliment their LCD's and Plasmas.

With the existing scenario, will the CAS compulsory scene be pushed in the rest of the country? Only time and the prayers of new entrants can tell.

    Well said mate

You can find most this member's posts are teasers. This clone's sponsor was not happy with few members here and he was extremely angry to see me thanking them for their useful contributions. So whenever I thank them he would come and post something distrubing. He don't have the guts to use his other id against RDI. It would be better if Admins and Mods look at this and take action against both the ids of this member.

I think it should be on Insat4b , maybe...... i am also not sure though on which satellite.. but i have feeling that it could be on Insat4b and that is why still Sun Directv is not being launched or tested on Insat4b. and also it could be on Measat3. anyhow lets wait for full announcement of it soon.

Bharti to be grilled about foreign share in DTH arm

    From http://www.indianexpress.com/story/34070.html

New Delhi, June 19: Bharti Airtel’s plans to launch direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast services may be further delayed after the home ministry raised questions regarding the company’s foreign direct investment (FDI) component, thus lobbing the application right back into the information & broadcasting ministry’s court.

According to I&B sources, a meeting has been sought with Bharti officials to obtain the necessary clarifications related to the equity structure and to verify whether indirect foreign investment levels in the DTH arm breach the overall cap. Bharti Airtel had applied for a DTH licence earlier this year under its 100 per cent subsidiary, Bharti Telemedia. However, since total foreign investment-including FDI, investments by non-resident Indians and foreign institutional investors-in DTH is capped at 49 per cent, with the FDI component at 20 per cent, the company was forced to make certain changes in its structure.

Since the FDI level in Bharti Airtel is 49 per cent, it reduced its stake in Bharti Telemedia to 40 per cent to comply with the regulatory provisions and another group company would pick up the remaining 60 per cent. Bharti plans to roll out DTH services by December. The company is likely to get transponder space on Insat 4CR, scheduled for launch sometime in August-September. Insat 4CR is the replacement for Insat 4C, which crashed last year, and has 12 Ku-band transponders. Bharti is expected to share this satellite with Reliance Communications’ Blue Magic DTH services.

Bharti Teletech will manufacture set-top boxes for the DTH service. At present, it manufactures or imports from China set-top boxes for free-to-air channels. The hub (required for downlinking and de-encryption of DTH channel feeds) is coming up at Manesar in Haryana.
