Italian TV station La 7 free to air on Hotbird 8
Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

David de Jong reports: The Italian TV station La 7 is finally free to air on satellite. Up to now, La 7 could only be received on Hotbird with a subscription to Sky Italia. La 7 - part of Telecom Italia Media - is a small national Italian TV station that competes with the main TV stations of Rai (Rai Uno, Rai Due, Rai Tre) & Mediaset (Rete 4, Canale 5, Italia 1) . La 7 has some significant information broadcasts (Otto e mezzo, l’Infedele, Invasioni Barbariche) and some significant satirical programmes (Markette, Crozza Italia).

As the Italian satellite audience is sizeable (more then 20 %) it was a strange situation whereby a subscription to Sky Italia was needed to receive La 7 on satellite while terrestrially (analogue & digital) it is available free to air. La 7 is also available on Atlantic Bird 1 at 12.5 West, but this is not a real solution as motorised and larger satellite dishes are required.

The future of this ‘independent’ channel of Telecom Italia Media however is uncertain, as Telecom Italia, the majority shareholder of Telecom Italia Media, will soon be sold to a consortium of Telefonica/Benetton/Mediobanca/Generali.
