The President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Fritz Pleitgen, ARD/WDR (DE), has welcomed the political agreement by the EU Culture and Audiovisual Council on the new Audiovisual Media Services Directive. He said: “The EBU is pleased that there is political agreement for the extended scope of the Directive. Audiences will now benefit from rules on advertising standards, protection of minors and cultural diversity across all audiovisual media services”.

He went on to say that: “The EBU expects the Audiovisual Media Services Directive to contribute greatly to the development of Europe’s audiovisual landscape and to enable Europe to compete in the digital world”.

European broadcasters had already supported the final compromise text negotiated between the European institutions. The EBU now encourages the plenary of the European Parliament to adopt the text as it stands, thereby following the recommendation of its Culture Committee.
