So when can we expect this to start its transmission?Chennai, 22 May, (Asiantribune.com): The clash between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and his close family ally, the powerful "Sun TV Network " owners, the "Maran Brothers," has deepened. The latest twist in the increasing tension due to the (in)famous family feud has resulted in the arrangement to launch a new TV channel--the "Kalaignar TV".
Karunanidhi has now decided to launch his party TV Channel called "Kalaignar TV" on his birthday - on June 03. The new TV channel will be launched with the support of Raj TV, another popular TV station, with Karunanidhi's patronage. Its logo will be the "Rising Sun"—the very logo of Karunanidhi's DMK party.
The recent family feud between paternal grandfather Karunanidhi and owners of the powerful Sun TV Network, the "Maran brothers," has led to the parting of ways between Karunanidhi and Marans.
The departure of Dhayanidhi Maran, the former powerful Minister who held IT Ministry in the Union Government of India, and his brother Kalanidhi Maran, according to Forbes he is among India's Richest 20 with $1.9 Billion worth of assets , who is the "Managing Director of the ‘Sun TV Networks,’ second largest television network in India, has forced the ruling DMK to start their own TV channel.
At the beginning of this month Thinakaran a Tamil language daily newspaper owned by Kalanidhi Maran, conducted an opinion poll through A.C.Neilson , a data survey company and published the results of the surveys. The findings created a ripple within the families of Karunanidhi and Marans which caused the final split.
Subsequently on May 13 Dayanidhi Maran, a DMK MP who held the most powerful IT Ministry with the Central Government resigned from his ministerial portfolio.
Dayanidhi's brother Kalandhi heads the Sun TV Network which has a clutch of 21 channels in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Also the Sun TV Network-owned "Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV)", the leading cable distribution company which controls the entire cable network operation in Tamil Nadu.
Up to the time of the split with the patriarch Karunanidhi’s family, Sun TV functioned as the official channel of the DMK party. But,suddenly the Sun TV has lost its position as the official TV of the DMK and simply discarded by the Party stalwarts.
Recently, the Sun TV crew and its OB Van were turned away from a DMK venue and Raj TV was given permission to telecast the event, attended by a host of eminent personalities including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
According to sources, Asian Tribune learnt that Karunanidhi formerly owned 20% stake in Sun TV network, but they were re-purchased by Maran Brothers. Thereafter Kalanidhi Maran disposed the equity to Mr. Ananda Krishnan, Malaysia's second richest entrepreneurs, for Indian Rs. 1500 crores. T.Ananda Krishnan, a Tamil of Indian origin with Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) roots, has wealth estimated to be $4.6 billion in 2005 (Forbes Ranking) and a Harvard Business Graduate. He is the chief of the major telecom corporate organization, Maxis Communication. He also helped to launch Mesat 1, Malaysia's pioneer Telecommunications satellite.
Malaysia's Anand Krishnan made his fortune from oil trading, property, entertainment and gaming, and now considered as South East Asia's media baron. His Maxis Communications is today Malaysia's top cellular operator and part of an elite multimedia conglomerate.
Sources said that it was only when assets of Sun TV was announced on the stock Exchange totaling to a tune of Indian Rs. 7000 crores that the Karunanidhi family realized that Marans have cleverly acquired the 20 percent stake from Karunanidhi for a paltry sum and profited many times over.
Reports said that Sun TV Networks shares have seen a steady slide over the past week while Raj Television Network's shares have gained.
In Tamil Nadu, almost all the leading political parties have their own TV channels as part of their propaganda armory. While Sun TV functioned earlier as the voice of DMK, the arch rival AIDMK led by enigmatic former matinee idol Jayalalithaa owns Jaya TV and since 06 September, the "Pattali Makkal Kadchchi" a pro LTTE Party organized by Ramadoss owns "Makkal TV".
“ Asian Tribune” earlier reported that senior DMK leaders Professor Anabalagan (Party Secretary) and Arcot Veerasamy (Treasurer of the Party) were of the view that the Party should have its own TV instead of relying any further on the Sun TV network owned by the estranged Maran Family.
Once a decision to own a TV channel was unanimously made in the most powerful Administrative council of the Party, the onus of organizing the channel was entrusted to M.Rajendran, Managing Director of Raj TV channel.
Raj TV's Rajendran, a former Sri Lankan of Indian origin who obtained Indian citizenship under the Srimavo–Shastri pact of 1964, is today said to be a powerful Tamil businessman in the State of Tamil Nadu.
According Raj TV sources interviews for the selection of staff for the new TV channel were held on May 21 at the DMK Party headquarters "Arivu Aalayam" where Sun TV too is housed. Sources also disclosed to “Asian Tribune” that many experienced technicians and staff with other TV channels have began joining with the new channel.
