BT reveals its Vision to the public

BT has unveiled its ‘TV on your terms’ advertising campaign as its launches its BT Vision IPTV product to the general public. A national TV advertising campaign will begin on Saturday evening during ITV’s popular Grease is the Word talent contest to be supported by print and online ads. The product will be available in the, arguably upscale, retailer John Lewis and from the summer the electrical specialist Comet. BT has placed a nominal price of £199 (€292) on the Philips manufactured DTT/IPTV hybrid known as the V-box, which will be free to BT Broadband customers, where speeds greater than 2 Mbps can be guaranteed. BT is making the inevitable comparisons with rival services, such as the 80-hour storage capability of the V-box, which unlike Sky+ carries no ongoing charge. BT Vision will be installed by BT engineers for an installation fee of £60 and a connection fee of £30. A self-install version will be introduced later in the year.

    Austrian cable nets go digital

Two of Austria’s 25 cable operators have ordered digital set-top boxes (DVB-C); between the two of them, Kabelsignal (of Niederösterreich) and Liwest (of Oberösterreich) 30,000 sets have been ordered. Other operators who are likely to join are Bnet (Burgenland) Salzburg AG and Telesystem Tirol. The STBs are part of the special digitalisation programme with a €40 subsidy for the consumer. In total there are 66,666 subsidised cable tuners available. Only interactive boxes with MHP capabilities are eligible for the subsidy. The two operators also will offer an HD box. Austria’s largest cable operator UPC Telekabel is not taking part in the programme, as the company does not sell its set-top boxes, but rents them out. They also use OpenTV rather than MHP as middleware.

    UPC posts mixed results

UPC Broadband has posted a mixed set of results for Q1 2007, with growth in broadband Internet access and telephony strong in most markets but digital TV and DTH operations performing more modestly. In the DTH sector, where UPC Direct faces growing competition from the Romanian-owned platform Digi TV, the number of subscribers in both Hungary (163,700) and the Czech Republic (133,400) was lower than three months earlier. Growth in the take-up of both Internet access and telephony was particularly pronounced in The Netherlands and Poland, which saw the respective subscriber totals rise by 19,500 and 29,400 (Internet) and 17,700 and 19,500 (telephony) in the first quarter. Although the company’s Dutch operation secured only 9,000 new digital TV subscribers in Q1, its Swiss operation added 16,900. UPC Broadband’s revenues in Europe as a whole amounted to $931.9 million (€689.1 million) in Q1 2007, or 24.7% more than in the corresponding period in 2006.

Court to decide in Telenet/Interkabel dispute

Belgian cable operator Telenet has ceased talks with the Interkabel consortium over the introduction of interactive digital television services and has begun legal proceedings. Interkabel has announced the launch of an interactive version of its digital In-Di platform, which Telenet claims is illegal. Under a contract between the two operators Telenet has the exclusive rights to offer point-to-point services on the four Interkabel networks, Integan, Interelektra, PBE and WVEM. Interkabel is of the opinion it is free to launch any television service it wants as this is not covered by the contract, Telenet claims interactivity and on-demand services are part of the agreement. After Interkabel launched its In-Di digital platform there was no problem, but the two companies have been talking to each other ever since about the possible introduction of the Telenet iDTV services over the Interkabel networks.

    Tenants ill-prepared for switchover

Digital UK is calling for action from landlords and tenants after research commissioned by the switchover organisation found that half of tenants in the UK did not know what to do once analogue screens go dark. The joint research project found that only 43% of private tenants, and 54% of council tenants understand what needs to be done in order to continue receiving television after the switchover. This compares with the national average of 64%. Three quarters of tenants already have digital TV on their primary TV sets – just about in line with the national average – but only one third of secondary sets have been converted. Digital UK is launching an advertising and leafleting campaign to advise landlords and tenants in the first four areas to be switched over.

Sky loss reduces Virgin customers adds

First quarter customer additions at Virgin Media fell by 29,200 to 184,300 as the cable operator felt the first effects of the withdrawl of Sky’s basic channels from its network. The total customer base fell 46,900 on the quarter to 4.81 million. Virgin also pointed to increased competitor activity for the fall, but the impact on churn might have been greater, due in part to the need for customers to give one month’s notice to the operator on cancelling their service. The company has 3.390 million TV subscribers, including 3.081m digital subscribers, compared to 3.3539m at the end of 2006. The cable operator remains in the red with an operating loss of £305.7 million (€449.24m).

    Mediaset PPV doubles revenues

Mediaset Premium, the Italian broadcaster’s terrestrial pay-TV service, has recorded a further 300,000 rechargeable cards sold since the beginning of the year. Around 2.2 million cards were also recharged with additional credits. Revenues doubled from €22.8 million in 2006 to €45.3 million in Q1 2007. The business is already profitable. The DTT service, including football from Serie A and Serie B, Grande Fratello (the Italian version of Big Brother), and a selection of premiering movies had sold over 1 million cards during 2006. Mediaset announced an operating profit of €964.9 million and a net profit of €124.5m. The Mediaset channels continue to be the market leaders among the 15-64 age group.

Danish TV2 to launch more channels

Danmark’s semi- public broadcaster TV2 is to launch more thematic channels and is also looking at expansion into eastern Europe, according to managing director Per Mikael Jensen in an interview with the Copenhagen Post. The theme of the new venture has not been decided, but possible options are business news, women’s lifestyle or family oriented programming. Jensen said the broadcaster is also particularly interested in launching channels for eastern Europe. Last year the company already launched TV2 News, the first 24 hour news channel in the country, and TV2 Sport as well as radio station TV2 Radio after acquiring the licences formerly held by Sky Radio.

BBC News 24 begins permanent streaming

BBC News 24 is now a permanent fixture on the BBC website. A ‘Watch Live’ link has been added to the BBC News front page to access the new stream and the channel’s availability will also been mentioned in relevant news stories. Previously News 24 has only been available during major news events. The channel is being geographically restricted to the UK. International news channel BBC World is also available in a streamed version, but as a paid for service through providers including Real Networks. Other news and current affairs programmes are available internationally, but viewers see these at the relatively low bit rate of 34 kbps compared to the 225 kbps enjoyed in the UK. The addition of News 24 follows the approval by the BBC Trust of on demand plans that include the streaming of all the BBC’s TV and radio networks.
