    Setanta unveils Premiership anchors

Irish pay-TV broadcaster Setanta has confirmed that ITV Sport's Angus Scott will front its Premiership football coverage next season, with expert analysis coming from former Liverpool and England star Steve McManaman.
Scott will be at the helm for Setanta's lineup of 46 live Premiership games from August 2007, the company announced today.

McManaman, who made 274 appearances for Liverpool, will sit alongside Scott for every Premier League game screened live on Setanta Sports, which is hoping to break Sky's stranglehold on pay-TV sport in the UK.

The Setanta director of sport, Trevor East, said: "These are two major signings for Setanta Sports - and the first of a number of major signings we'll be announcing in the coming months as we prepare for next season. Angus is a terrific transfer from ITV.

"In Steve McManaman we have a big name who has enjoyed a glittering career at the very top level. His intelligent insight and opinions will ensure our viewers get the best analysis available."

Scott said: "This is a dream job for any football fan and I'm looking forward to bringing the very best Premier League action into viewers' homes."

Setanta's Premiership coverage will be available on Freeview at a "special introductory" price of Ł10.99 a month, compared with a Ł15 monthly fee for subscribers to Setanta Sports on satellite TV.

TVTel to launch satellite service on May 15

The satellite service of Portuguese cable TV operator TVTel is set to launch on May 15 via a Eutelsat Eurobird at the 9° East orbital position.

The pay-TV package will be made up of 17 channels (RTP1, RTP2, SIC, TVI, RTPN, Fox, AXN, Canal Hollywood, MGM, Odisseia, The Biography Channel, Canal Panda, Canal de História, ESPN Classic, NASN, MTV and Regiăo Norte TV), as well as an info channel and two test channels. The operator is planning a special promotional launch campaign, lasting three months, during which the monthly subscription will cost E9.95 instead of the full price of E13.

Regiăo Norte TV (RNTV) will be TVTel’s first venture in the content production area. The channel, which will launch via cable and satellite in September, will substitute Invicta TV, acquired by the operator at the beginning of the year.

    Two more Uragan satellites gone

Russia has silently deactivated two Uragan satellites in its GLONASS navigation satellite constellation, which might make it harder to accomplish the goal of having 18 working spacecraft in orbit by the end of the year.

    Akimbo abandons set-top box strategy

Akimbo, the US internet-delivered video-on-demand service, is abandoning its set-top box strategy and repositioning itself as a content aggregation partner for IPTV operators.
"We simply want to be in everyone's box," said Akimbo chief executive Thomas Frank as he confirmed Akimbo was quitting its set-top box deal with RCA.
Frank hinted the company Akimbo might be a partner with Apple and its Apple TV device, which bridges the once-separated worlds of personal computer-based content and the TV.
"I could see Apple as a partner, but meanwhile there are other boxes," added Frank.
Last June Akimbo raised $15.5m in an investment round that saw Cisco and AT&T become backers with venture capital group Blueprint Ventures.

Gemstar-TV Guide licences EPG for IPTV

Gemstar-TV Guide International is to licence its patented electronic programme guide (EPG) and related technology to US telecommunications group Verizon. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
Verizon operates the fibre-optic-delivered IPTV service, FiOS, in the US. Last week it announced it had gained an additional 141,000 FiOS customers in the first three months of 2007, taking its total FiOS subscriber base to 348,000 subscribers.
Gemstar-TV Guide said it would collaborate with Verizon to enable FiOS TV customers to remotely schedule recordings on FiOS digital video recorders using TV Guide listings.
Rich Battista, chief executive officer of Gemstar-TV Guide said: "We are pleased to have this patent license agreement in place with Verizon, our first with a telco video provider."

Half of European viewers 'watching TV online'

Nearly half of Europe's television viewers are watching programmes online, according to a study by Motorola.
The tech giant's survey of 2,500 broadband users in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, found that 45% of viewers are already watching TV via the web.
France led the way with 59% of respondents saying they were watching broadband video services. "Italians and Brits come in second and third respectively, while German viewers remain most bound to schedules set by TV broadcasters with only 33% catching shows online," said Motorola.
The survey also found that 45% of European viewers expect to be making video calls via their home TVs by the time the 2012 Olympics begin.
"These results show that viewers across Europe are no longer satisfied with fitting into schedules dictated by broadcasters and are turning to the choice and flexibility offered by TV over the internet," said Karl Elliott, Motorola's connected home division's European marketing chief.
"We are witnessing a nation of citizen schedulers who are in control of their entertainment, allowing them to decide not only what they watch, but exactly how and when they want to watch it."
