Default Bharti to roll out DTH by December’

NEW DELHI, APR 2: Bharti Airtel’s DTH venture is expected to roll out by the end of this calendar year, chairman and managing director, Sunil Mittal said at the Indian Express Group’s Idea Exchange interaction. The company had applied for DTH licence early this year.
“The Direct-To-Home (DTH) services will be part of Bharti Airtel under its broadband vertical, which have just under 2 million connections. These are our target audience,” Mittal said. “We expect the business to be up and running by the end of this calendar year,” he added. The company is currently waiting for government clearances and will soon after start operations depending on the availability of transponder space on satellites with an Indian footprint.

According to sources, the company will probably get transponder space on Insat 4CR scheduled for launch sometime in August-September. Insat 4CR is the replacement for Insat 4C, which crashed last year and has 12 Ku band transponders. Bharti is expected to share this satellite with Reliance's Blue Magic DTH services.

At present, Bharti Teletech, the manufacturing arm under Bharti Enterprises, manufactures or imports (from China) set-top-boxes under the Betel brand name mainly for free-to-air channels (FTA). Their hub (required for downlinking and de-encryption of channel feeds in DTH) is coming up at Manesar in Haryana.

As far as content goes, Mittal said that the company will not get into content production. “We are a pipe and we want to be a preferred pipe. We will remain neutral towards content… the content provider can come to us. Ultimately it's up to the customer to decide what he wants,” he said. On Bharti's IPTV services, he said the company had 120 channels and was still testing the service. At present, there are three players in the DTH market (DD Direct, Tata Sky and Dish TV) and a fourth (Sun Direct) is expected any day.
