Europe’s largest commercial broadcasting group, RTL, has signed a ten-year extension to its contract with the Luxembourg government, ensuring that it will remain based in Luxembourg until at least 2020. The existing contract, expiring in 2010, was signed in 1995. RTL is majority-owned by German media conglomerate Bertelsmann. It runs 34 television and 33 radio stations in 11 countries.

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said his government was very satisfied at the renewal of the concession for radio and TV frequencies. The contract includes the RTL affiliate Broadcasting Centre Europe, which operates the transmitters in Luxembourg and provides other technical services. It also ensures the continuation of the public service in Luxembourgish, RTL Lëtzebuerg.
