Real Madrid in TV rights record

Spanish football club Real Madrid has agreed to sell the television rights to its games to production company Grupo Mediapro in a deal worth €1.1 billion. It is believed that the deal, which runs through until 2013, is a record for a sports club and is double that of the previous contract.

Spanish football clubs sell the rights to their games on a non-exclusive basis. The current contract with Sogecable’s Ca*nal+ runs through until 2008 and overlaps with the Mediapro deal that takes effect this season. Already Ca*nal+ has been forced to pay more to screen matches featuring Barcelona following an earlier Mediapro brokered deal.
