    Default CAS & how it works (India)


    Dear friends

    Indian scenerio

    Conditional access system or CAS is already in use in Chennai & soon to follow will be Delhi, Bombay & Calcuttta.

    What is CAS?
    It all started in 1985 with the birth of cable TV in India, all the channels were free to the cable operator & he in return provided around 15 channels for a deposit of around 200 - 500 Rs & a monthly fee of RS 50 - 100 in various cities.
    The cable operator took all the money, paid no tax to the government & the broadcaster had an empty pocket.
    Then comes encription, so cable guys have to pay the broadcaster a fee based on connection points, operator still does not pay tax.
    Most cable operators short change (cheat) the broadcaster by showing less cennections than they actually have.
    3 major players with their bouquets, star, sony & zee also sports channels
    charge a fee to the cable operator for their bouquet channels, still the cable guys cheat them.
    Government steps in with CAS & this is how it works
    End viewer has pay around Rs 3000 for a STB, with smart card provided by the cable guy, you can use only one TV per box unlike cable, you get EPG. You choose your bouquet on set basis or order a la carte like you are in a restaurant ordering a set meal & then you have additional items likes sweets a drink or coffee & pay accordingly, but this has to be done in advance.
    The advantage is you only pay for the bouquet you like & the extras, no more claims of giving you 100 odd channels & hike in the price.

    For the cable guy no more running around to get payment, you dont pay you dont get access.
    The service provider or channel provider gets his fair share of the revenue.
    The cable operator cannot escape tax payment to Govt.
    People are happy & government is happy, but the catch here is any new pay channels being launched will not be cheap.

    u Forgot one samall detail . the VIEWER PAY TO WATCH Ads. NOWEHERE in this wide world would u find FOOLS LIKE us INDIANS who PAY TO WATCH ADS. on HBO a 1.5 hr movie runs for 2 -2.5 hrs. on Sony a 3 hr movie runs for 5 + hrs . this is GREAT and adding insult to injury the PAY CHANNELS INCREASE the PRICES ANNUALY.

    Many may argue that the sub rates are LOW but that is not true. HBO has a DECLARED sub of 35+ million in INDIA. when HBO is ADD FREE in SINGAPORE for sing$10 (INR250) with not even a 100,000 subs why cant they go BREAKFREE IN INDIA?

    You are aboslutely right, DSTV in South Africa with popular super sports channels shows very little Ads, Its the opposite with ADD universe - Pehla bouquets, U pay 2 watch TV as well as as Ads. Thought that pay TV was free of Ad Phew
