Default MTV - More M, less TV

MTV - More M, less TV
    29.07.2006

Don't look for any splashy celebration on MTV next week when the pioneering cable network turns 25. For one thing, a 20th blowout didn't attract much of an audience.

"We're not a reflective organization," says MTV music group chief Van Toffler. Most of the channel's viewers weren't even alive when it launched, and for them, a reminder of its age might be a turnoff.

Instead, MTV is preparing for the future. Its youthful viewers are most likely to embrace new technology.

"The television channel will never go away; it's had its highest ratings ever," Toffler says. But broadband channel MTV Overdrive and new cellphone content will offer "vibrant, visually rich screens and will be companions" to the mother ship.

Because it owns nearly all of its programming, MTV has more flexibility to adapt, offering online videos on demand, for example.

"More has changed in the last six months than since 1990," says MTV president Christina Norman. The channel wants multitasking TRL viewers to "toggle" between TVs and PCs, which can offer expanded content while videos or commercials are playing. "We're putting the best of our programming on whatever platform viewers want," including iTunes, Overdrive or the cable channel.

Eventually, Norman says, partly scripted series may offer viewers their choice of characters to watch: "A show like Laguna Beach, five years from now, maybe we can customize it and you tell us which story you want." And increasingly, broadband can offset complaints that MTV airs very little "M": "We're going to use other screens to actually make a bigger deal about music."

MTV this week announced a September UK launch of Flux, a cable network and broadband "social networking" channel that will offer user-generated content, joining similar channels in Italy, Japan and the Netherlands.

Though MTV has a long history of unscripted series, from The Real World to The Hills, the future "is not going to be strictly reality-based," Toffler says. "We're looking at a bunch of scripted stuff from filmmakers" that viewers could see next year.

Default MTV finds growing hunger for shows on the Web

MTV finds growing hunger for shows on the Web

While mainstream media focussed on MTV's 25th anniversary this week, Internet watchers could look back at the first year of offspring MTV Overdrive, which is leading a rush of video programmers onto the Web to find new audiences.

MTV Overdrive is MTV.com's "broadband channel" launched in July 2005 after testing, and it Webcasts many original programs like its "After Shows" that MTV fans don't see on cable TV.

Increasingly, major U.S. TV networks are also creating original Web content to satisfy people's hunger for Web video. Last month, NBC said it would make "Webisodes" of a comedy "Nobody's Watching," which was a hit on the YouTube Web site.

Web giants such as Yah*o! also are enhancing their role as content distributors by allowing people to post videos on their Web sites. Yah*o also has original programs like "The 9," which counts down its picks of top videos on the Web.

Companies hope to rake in hundreds of millions of new advertising dollars, and advertisers like being able to closely track which ads work with consumers. For their part, Web watchers see the types of shows they want, when they want.

"We have seen more change in the past six months than in the past six years as far as this explosion of video content," said Christina Norman, president of MTV. "But we've still got learning to do in terms of what works and what doesn't."

Several elements have recently created a more user-friendly environment for Web video, experts said.

The technology to upload and download video has improved, making the experience better. Most important, the number of high-speed broadband connections to homes has reached critical mass, and broadband is necessary for good Web watching.
