    If your laptop cannot auto-detect the USB-RS232 cable simply run the driver software located in the distributed CD of your USB-RS232 cable. Doing this will fix the problem.

    If you cannot use the USB-RS232 cable to upgrade your receiver check or re-aasign the port setting of your cable.

    Follow this steps:

    Systems Properties -- Device Manager --- Ports (Com & LPT).

    By default the serial cabale is at port 1 but you can assign you USB-RS232 cable to any port simply by

    Clicking on the USB to Serial COM Port --- Port Settings --- Advance -- Change the COM Port number.

    If you are using downloading software for any receiver make sure you assign the correct Port settings in order to have a succesful PC to reciver connection.

    USB-to-RS 232 will not work with reciever even if the pins are correctly used[as per reciever requirement].The bit rate binding to reciever hardware is different through a USB to RS232 coneverter than a normal serial connector.So you must use a loader which syncronise the transfer to communicate with reciever.[Now some recievers have such loaders]

    Hope it Helps

    First thing is detection and the 2nd thing is ports configuration,unless it detects no data transfer is possible

    Default USB-RS232

    Let's assume that your PC detected the USB converter and the driver is installed. Check the PC port configuration, most loaders used com1 or com2 make sure those coms are not used by other devices then set the USB to either com1 or com2. If com1 or com2 are both used, assigned that device to a different com that is available wiht your PC and used your desired com to USB-RS232 converter.

    @sallas,

    do you have any problems with OTHER usb devices being connected?
    are you connecting your cable via a usb hub?
    do you have other USB devices connected at the same time? (disconnecting them all and leaving the usb cable might just work)
    have you tried updating your motherboard drivers?

    if after having done all the previously stated suggestions by others and still you don't get a confirmation (windows should detect it and hunt for drivers) then you might be having a bad product in your hands. have it replaced if new and under warranty.
