Spanish pay-TV could achieve 42% penetration in 2009

The Spanish pay-TV market is set for strong growth over the coming years, and could reach a 42% penetration rate by 2009, compared to the current 25%, claims Eugenio Galdón, president of cable operator Ono. He added that in the rest of Europe the penetration rate totals 42% in France, 44% in the UK and 62% in Germany. According to Galdón, Ono currently holds 900,000 subscribers and has a 26% market share, achieving a total TV market share of 5.42%.

On the other hand, according to the manager, the three key elements Ono is betting on are the pay-TV platform, the capacity to aggregate content and thematic video on demand services, as well as the capacity to produce its own content, such as the Somos and Telecorazón channels, the last in alliance with audiovisual producer Mediapro.
