Viacom founder and executive chairman Sumner Redstone today announced plans for the launch of a dedicated MTV Turkey channel this September, reaching some 6 million homes.

The localized channel and website will replace the existing MTV Europe feed in the Turkish market, where MTV Networks International also operates an eight-hour Turkish-language Nickelodeon channel. MTV Turkey was formed via a licensing agreement with MTVNI and Multi-Channel Developers (MCD), which also operates the VH1 Europe feed in Turkey.

The channel will feature Turkish music and locally produced music programming, including Hit List Turkey, a weekly Turkish pop chart show that will be produced in Istanbul and feature popular Turkish music stars. The show’s VJ will also be selected through a nationwide VJ contest entitled MTV Turkey VJ Search. Over time, MTVNI plans to expand its local production by developing Turkish versions of some of the company’s formats like Pimp My Ride and Cribs. MTV Turkey is also planning to complement its programming mix with long-form programming, documentaries and specials such as the MTV Europe Music Awards and MTVNI’s concert series MTV Live. The channel will target local 15- to-34-year-olds and will be available via cable and satellite.

“We’re excited about our future in Turkey,” commented Redstone. “We’ve always been enchanted with the country’s vibrant music culture, and now MTV Turkey will have the opportunity to strengthen our connection with Turkish youth. We also see tremendous opportunities to expand Nickelodeon and VH1 in the region while introducing new brands and genres through every possible media platform.”
