Bundesliga kicks off 3D coverage

Germany’s national football association Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) will commence live coverage of Bundesliga games in 3D with the beginning of the second half of the 2010/11 season. The debut will be the match between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Köln on 16. January 2011 at 17.30 CET.

Each weekend, one game will be captured in 3D and shown on pay-TV platforms Sky Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom’s Entertain. The production is handled by DFL subsidiary Sportcast which also provides the basic TV broadcasts for each season’s 612 Bundesliga games.

For the live coverage, Sportcast won’t just use special 3D cameras, but also a dedicated directing and camera concept which will consider the special requirements of the new technology.

For reception, viewers will need a 3D TV set with 3D glasses in addition to their pay-TV subscription and HD box.
