EU takes first step towards single digital market
April 20th, 2010

The ministers of telecommunications of the European Union have given their unanimous approval to the Declaration of Granada, which lays the foundations of Europe’s digital ...ure based on comprehensive broadband coverage in the EU by 2013, the removal of regulatory obstacles for cross-border transactions and common legislation against piracy, among other matters.

The meeting of ministers had to adapt to the air traffic restrictions in Europe due to the eruption of a volcano in Iceland. Only four ministers could be physically present (from Portugal, Bulgaria and Greece, as well as Spain), while a further 15 ministers took part in the working sessions via videoconference.

The Vice-president of the European Commission and Commissioner for Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, also participated in the digital conference, and expressed her support for the principles contained in the Declaration of Granada, which will subsequently be incorporated into the 2020 Strategy to be approved in June.
