Austria’s ORF plans new HD channel

Austrian public broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) wants to launch a second TV channel in high definition (HDTV).

“ORF 1 has been produced completely in HD since the soccer European Cup 2008,” said Günter Pateisky, project director HDTV at ORF, in Vienna. “We are now planning to also produce ORF 2 in this standard,” he said, without revealing further details.

ORF 1 HD was launched on June 2 2008. The channel simulcasts ORF 1’s programmes in high definition. Content not produced in the new TV technology is up-converted. The offer is available in Austria via cable, satellite and IPTV.
